Fun day in Sunderland

A visit to the Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art with two exhibitions - Giuseppe Davies: Vie is an interactive installation on until the 3rd of April. It is a screen that responds to touch with lights and sound. It's very pretty. The larger exhibition on is Think Tank: A marketplace of ideas ending 13th of Feb so we are lucky we caught it. A bunch of ideas to reflect and improve society...Richard liked the We Not Me poster. I liked the Institute of Economic Affairs map, simple, pretty and interesting - reminiscent of the Information Aesthetics Blog.

Then we went to Angelo's Ristorante for excellent Italian food which Richard got to order with a silly Italian accent - good fun. For appetizers we had Formaggio di Capra e Rosti di Patate Croccante and Camembert. The main event was Ravioli alla Pizzaiola and Tagliatelle con Vedura e Zafferano.

For desert we went to Stardust which has a cute and crafty gift shop downstairs and a pretty cafe upstairs. Picked up the ring at left from the gift shop. Under £4 and a bit of fun. Upstairs, it's a shame there weren't more people there - the couches are the kind you sink into and the coffee and lemon cake were yummy. It seems like a perfect spot for students to camp out in with laptops and to just hang out.

Gregory Liszt’s Deadly Gentlemen at the Cluny2 in Newcastle

Went to see the Deadly Gentlemen at the Cluny 2 in Newcastle. It was a Jumpin' Hot Club gig - they put on lots of folk, alt-rock good stuff on.

Serious Sam Barrett opened. A guy from Leeds singing country...I had an amusing misheard lyric moment on one of his songs. "She's as pretty as the hair on the mossad? what?!!...spoke to him between sets to ask him what he was singing...She's as pretty as the heather on the moorside - makes a lot more sense. : )

Gregory Liszt is the banjo player from Crooked Still. We saw them at the Cluny 2 also. They are amazing and the venue was packed that night. Greg Liszt was very entertaining and as soon as I saw this new project he was doing was coming I immediately bought tickets. I was stunned that there weren't more people at the gig, maybe people were scared of winter weather. Videos of how awesome it was here.

Video Games Live at the Sage – 25 Nov 2009

Kev and I went to see Video Games Live at the Sage - Northern Sinfonia performing music from video games. Possibly the only time we will see Northern Sinfonia at the Sage decked out in Threadless Gaming T-shirts. The show was good fun. Multi-generational audience. Our only lament was that we weren't seeing it in the US or Japan where it would have been sure to sell out and more people would have been dressed up.

Jack Wall was the conductor, Tommy Tallarico was the MC. It turns out he composed the music to one of the games I used to play Earthworm Jim (also loved the cartoon). Martin Leung the video game pianist also performed including a rendition of Super Mario blindfolded. There was also a skype video chat with Marty O'Donnell. You can watch a good chunk of it with the youtube playlist below.

How come noone ever told me how delicious this combination is? On my way home from hearing David Grossman speak at the PEN festival's closing event I stopped into Sparky's All-American Food (333 Lafayette Street) and had a simple. warm and gooey grilled peanut butter and jelly sandwich. So yummy!

I'll have to try an upscale one at the cute Peanut Butter and Co. (240 Sullivan Street).

Is it because my parents (and me, technically) were immigrants that I didn't know about this All-American treat? What else have I been missing out on?

Saw Matthew Bourne's Edward Scissorhands tonight at BAM. New Adventures was in fine form, the dancers were great and so was the set. The tweaking of the story (adding a prologue) for the stage worked. The town vixen was especially fun.

Read a recent review that questioned the need for the retelling of the film in dance theater form....Lots of fairy tales get retold again and again...there is no reason not to add a modern work to the mix. Definitely a good time. Upcoming dates (in Toronto, St. Paul, MN, Denver and Seattle) can be found here.

Went with my cousin Liat to see Korin Allal and Eran Zur at Makor's Cafe. We had dinner at Spice on the East side and cabbed it. We got to the cafe which is a neat venue, there was a good jazz band playing before the show. If you are going to Makor cafe go have dinner there...you get a bunch of people who show up and grab a table and leave jackets or whatever there saving half a table's worth of chairs [It is very fifth grade.] and the venue refuses to add more chairs. We got there in plenty of time for the show but definitely not to get a seat. We stood at the back in the center which wasn't bad since it is not a large venue. The show was amazing. They both know how to rock hard...

Aqualung with Sara Bareilles at Hiro Ballroom 12-March-2007

Met a couple of nice, interesting people Jason and Kate (I feel really bad because I'm not sure if his name is Jason or James - it was something with a J) and asked to share their booth. The opening act Sara Bareilles was good. Her voice sounded a bit like Sara McLachlan with Norah Jones and some slight Tori Amos going on. Not bad singers to be compared to....

Aqualung were fun as ever with a mix of old and new songs and cute banter. Pressure Suit is available as of today. I finally have a women's aqualung shirt....damn American Apparrel....some of their XLs fit and some of them don't....

Dateline Israel: New Photography and Video Art

Went to a preview of Dateline Israel: New Photography and Video Art at The Jewish Museum. The image in the postcard is Pavel Wolberg's "Qualqilya (Outskirts)", 2002. It is a small exhibit with some quality stuff. Though "New" is a bit relative here, most of the works are from the early 2000's, I had seen many of the works in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem when I was living in Tel Aviv from '99-'03. Among the artists featured are Pavel Wolberg, Miki Kratzman and Gillian Laub. I was surprised not to see any works by Adi Nes and I'm pretty sure I was at the protest featured in the film by Amit Goren.

The museum has free admission on Saturdays if you want to check it out through August 5th, 2007.

Went to Union Square to Filene's Basement's Bridal Sale held in NY today...if you think of going next year - it's true women are stripping in the aisles between the racks of wedding dresses. There is no way you will get to the fitting rooms so most people come in bicycle shorts and sports bras. Lady in your nude colored thong and bra - not cool...

In Spitting Distance

Saw In Spitting Distance a one man show written by Taher Najib, performed by Khalifa Natour and directed by Ofira Henig as part of the Israel Non-Stop Festival 2007. Official description: “Winner of the first prize in Israel's TheaterNetto Festival, this moving and ironic personal drama touches on all the complexities of the Israeli/Palestinian situation. Experience a rare collaboration between Israeli and Palestinian artists in this humorous yet painful story of a Palestinian actor with an Israeli passport trying to travel from Paris to Tel-Aviv to Ramallah on September 11, 2002.”

How to Save the World and Find True Love in 90 Minutes

Saw a fun musical yesterday. How to Save the World and Find True Love in 90 Minutes. A high-energy, screwball musical comedy about a phobic U.N. bookstore clerk who develops the ability to read people’s minds, saves the world and finds true love. He happens to have a singing Greek chorus while doing it. This musical will not change your life. It will occasionally appeal to your inner fifth grader. And it will brighten your day and make you leave the theater smiling. Of note in the cast I saw were Kevin Smith Kirkwood and Pamela Bob (understudy) who are in the chorus. Their energy could barely be contained by the stage. We were laughing out loud. For a good time get tix.

Consumerist has posted a solution to flying wii controllers. Comment on waiting for an official solution from Nintendo: "It ain't carved from Zelda's hyperpolygnal ass and handed down by the hands of many small Japanese gods, but it'll do the trick."

Nintendo Wii is a new gaming system where you move the controllers through the air to control the action on the screen. Some people have been doing so a bit overzealously.
Went to see Snakes on a Plane opening night in Hartlepool, a town in the northeast of England. In NY I would have had to buy my tickets online a couple of weeks in advance as soon as they went on sale. People would be in costume, bringing snakes to the screening (really quite fabulous in my imagination.) Maybe doing the cheers and audience participation here: snakeplay.pbwiki.com/script

Also, I would have had to get there at least an hour in advance to get a seat that wasn't in the front row - lining up before the previous screening let out. There is something to be said for arriving to the theater 4 minutes before the stated time having 12 people in the theater and your pick of seats. Welcome to Hartlepool.

Birth of a terrortubby

Birth of a terrortubby Purim 2002. Purim is a Jewish holiday that you're supposed to get dressed up for. Another custom is bringing food baskets to friends. Just because I had to be at work - didn't mean I wasn't going to enjoy it. So of course the rational thing to do is put a plush red teletubby head on as a silly hat and bring food baskets to work along with fuzzy antennas and assorted other props so co-workers could get into the spirit. The rest of my outfit was not as festive. Regular comfort-gear olive green cargo pants, and a black t-shirt. This being Tel Aviv in 2002 - someone thought I looked suspicious.
