A long day starting with ranting at the TV, buying a brick, mass transit misery and then a gig at the Westgarth Social Club.

Started the morning annoyed with the BBC Breakfast show’s discussion of video games. They asked for people’s thoughts on video games asking do they have no impact or do they have a negative impact on children.

There was no option for positive impact on motor skills, hand-eye coordination, literacy and I seem to recall a study of multi-player online games leading to transferable skills for management in the workplace. Yet all video games were being tarred by the same brush.

It seems what they’re really concerned about is clueless parenting. Consenting, responsible adults should not be penalized and required to consume strictly content sanitized for children’s protection. Not everyone draws the line in the same place, so there needs to be room for a multiplicity of community standards…none of this was discussed.

In better television news, I am thoroughly excited for the new series of Misfits to be starting.

After a bizarre day at work, went to the MFC shop to purchase a Boro Brick in honour of my friends coming to visit from Chicago. I’m taking them to a match and now we will have a permanent souvenir of the occasion. : )

Stopped off at the new Caffe Nero in Middlesbrough before heading to the train.

Getting home tonight was misery. Took my usual 5.32 train only to hear an announcement saying we would have to get off one stop later at Thornaby to transfer to a bus which was of course not waiting for us. A very cold over an hour later we finally got on a bus. We stood at the side of the road waiting as empty buses drove past mocking our misery. Finally made it home a little over 2 hours after I started. Good mass transit is really the thing I miss most about NY.

The sad part was my plans for the evening were back in Middlesbrough again!

All’s well that ends well. We missed the first few opening acts but caught a really good mellow set by Billy the Kid and then new band The Vaccines at the Westgarth Social Club in Middlesbrough. The Vaccines reminded me of James crossed with a bit of the Ramones and a random folk singer. Julie thought they sounded a bit like the Editors.

A nice way to end the day. Here’s a vid of them playing Wreckin’ Bar (Ra Ra Ra) on Jools Holland last week.

A visit to the Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art with two exhibitions - Giuseppe Davies: Vie is an interactive installation on until the 3rd of April. It is a screen that responds to touch with lights and sound. It's very pretty. The larger exhibition on is Think Tank: A marketplace of ideas ending 13th of Feb so we are lucky we caught it. A bunch of ideas to reflect and improve society...Richard liked the We Not Me poster. I liked the Institute of Economic Affairs map, simple, pretty and interesting - reminiscent of the Information Aesthetics Blog.

Then we went to Angelo's Ristorante for excellent Italian food which Richard got to order with a silly Italian accent - good fun. For appetizers we had Formaggio di Capra e Rosti di Patate Croccante and Camembert. The main event was Ravioli alla Pizzaiola and Tagliatelle con Vedura e Zafferano.

For desert we went to Stardust which has a cute and crafty gift shop downstairs and a pretty cafe upstairs. Picked up the ring at left from the gift shop. Under £4 and a bit of fun. Upstairs, it's a shame there weren't more people there - the couches are the kind you sink into and the coffee and lemon cake were yummy. It seems like a perfect spot for students to camp out in with laptops and to just hang out.

Had a day off of work today. Took the train to Sunderland to meet Richard. We started off going to Sunderland library home of the Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art. There were a couple of exhibitions on. Giuseppe Davies: Vie is an interactive installation on until the 3rd of April. It is a screen that responds to touch with lights and sound.
For desert we went to Stardust which has a cute and crafty gift shop downstairs and a pretty cafe upstairs.
I then attempted to recreate the artwork on the wall of Stardust, a photograph of a sculpture just outside. It is a 2008 sculpture called Seachange by Laura Johnston. It is meant to recall the hull of a ship and the shipbuilding heritage of the area as it transforms into something new. [Part of the Sunderland City Centre Public Art Trail]

Unfortunately it was raining so we didn’t want to spend too much time attempting to get the shot. You can see my few attempts on flickr.

The little charge you get from picking something up for £2 and £10 is really the same and lasts about the same amount of time (and £100 doesn’t really last ten times as long) – it’s a good thing to remember. We then stopped off at Richard’s to pick up the cute and stinky Florence and set off for Hartlepool.

I am a terrible navigator. Hopefully this will change when I learn how to drive. After a number of phone calls to Kev to set us back in the right direction we had a nice relaxed evening with some gewurztraminer from Chile via Morrisons and a quick sweet and sour chickeny bits with rice dish a la Kev.

Mostly it’s just the two of us but it was nice to have company too. It’s easy to forget when you get into you routine.

It is called Active Life Outdoor Challenge in the US and is a bit cheaper for the exact same game and mat. The only differences as far as I know are the box artwork and the ratings systems used in the US vs. Europe.

Artwork:

UK edition features visuals of a whole family – mom, dad and a boy and girl. Boy and girl are playing – parents are on the couch behind them. The mom has a evry traditional crossed-legs pose. The U.S. version features only a boy.

The evolution of the artwork in the 2 regions via Extreme Challenge (the next game from this series) UK version has a whole family again but this time mom is moving rather than having her legs crossed. The U.S. version now features a boy and girl and still not targeting adults.

It is too easy to spend money. Grabbing lunch at Boots and picking up cute, cheap jewelry is the latest way to piss away money £5 at a time.

So far, two rings and a pair of earrings….

The spelling is jewellery in the UK. There’s a nice wikipedia article on American and British English spelling differences.

When I was a kid growing up in Brooklyn I liked the British u added to colour and labour. I found it aesthetically pleasing or something. I wrote colour on a spelling test which was marked wrong. Being a nerd I brought in a dictionary and pointed out to my teacher that it was an acceptable alternate spelling.

First Kickstarter project I ever backed.

Kickstarter is a way for creative people to get their dream projects, big or small, funded by the general public through microfinance as opposed to big massive sponsorship deals. These can be events, art projects, documentaries.

Similar to PBS / NPR funding drives there are donation levels and rewards, decided on by the creative people.

Many post videos to peak interest that are fantastic and status updates can be really creative too.

I found out about kickstarter via Ken Jennings (highly recommend his book) when he linked to Eric Berlin’s crossword puzzles.

Eric Berlin creates crossword puzzles. He wanted to create a suite of puzzles that interlink. To generate interest he linked to a pdf of a previous suite of puzzles on Brooklyn as a theme. They’re quite good. Just donating$1 gave you access to the puzzles and helped them to get made. For $5 people could participate in a competition. Reward levels above that included copies of his book.

Successful wedding dress shopping in NYC.

After the nightmare on Friday I didn’t have high hopes for the Bridal Garden.

I had called a consignment shop that was supposed to have wedding gowns. When I told them my size they said don’t bother coming in. Bridal Garden told me they have a handful in my size.

After brunch at a nearby Le Pain Quotidien. I walked over with a few friends. Gina pointed us to the section that had dresses in my size. We pulled off about ten dresses for me to try on. At the second or third one I tried on my friends heard me say ooooh. It fit perfectly when I put it on. This is the dress I am buying, it will have some slight alterations done to it but I AM DONE!

We also found a veil by Henry Roth. No, I had never heard the name before but the thing is beautiful and also a headpiece by Nelson D’Leon. The dress is Lorry Couture, which I can’t find any information about online….but if fits perfectly so who cares.

The shop sells dresses, veils, tiaras and little flower sculptures you can add to hair arrangements of people in the bridal party. I really like the fact that at least the large chunk of change getting spent for one day is going to help needy children as opposed to just the purchase of something I will wear once in my life.

I called Bill to tell him about my excitement. He got all depressed saying that he had hoped I would be his one female friend who would not lose her mind when it was time to do wedding planning and get really into stupid surrounding hoopla….Button I was sharing shopping excitement with you not wedding excitement and I AM DONE. This was not long, prolonged and miserable as it could have been.

I highly recommend The Bridal Garden if you are shopping for a wedding dress in the NYC area.

Went to Union Square to Filene’s Basement’s Bridal Sale held in NY today…if you think of going next year – it’s true women are stripping in the aisles between the racks of wedding dresses. There is no way you will get to the fitting rooms so most people come in bicycle shorts and sports bras. Lady in your nude colored thong and bra – not cool.

I didn’t get there super-early. My mom talked to some folks who had made there way from North Carolina and had been waiting since about 2 AM. Doors opened at 8:00. We got there about 9:30. There were plenty of dresses. Some of them were really gorgeous. Prices ranged from $250 (for dresses that cost about 900-1000) to $699. Some famous designers are in the mix.

Brides come with teams in matching silly hats and t-shirts. Though from what I’ve read about Boston it’s definitely not as crazy. Teams in NYC were happily trading gowns.

Here’s the thing – if you are not a size 10 or under it may not be worth your time. There are tons of amazing dresses for skinny folks…I am generally a size 10-14 (with broad shoulders). In theory bridal gowns should be one size up. I found that I could not close anything under a 16. Was trying on the few 16 and 18s I could find. My mom pointed out the ridiculousness of bridal gown sizes going up in number, at the time when you should feel your most attractive…There were also a couple of size 24s that were kind of ugly.

Also, if you do go take water and maybe snacks with you – wedding dresses are heavy so it is a workout to try them on for a few hours…staying hydrating is probably a good idea to keep you from getting irritated during what should be a happy, fun time.

Looking for any recommendations (NY based preferrable) for affordable wedding gowns that are not backless…in larger sizes.

Update: Wedding Dress Shopping Is Done

Freecycle Freemeet and Flushed Away.

Today’s Freecycle Freemeet was a huge success. It was held in conjunction with an NYU group – Earth Matters. We got a clean space with live music, clothing racks and a separate room for sorting clothes. P.J. was happy and even got to take a break to eat lunch. Thanks to Marcy for getting the pizza. Got rid of a bunch of stuff and only brought home a couple of books and an incentive skirt – it doesn’t quite fit yet but…

After the freemeet saw Flushed Away, the new animated film from Aardman Animation (Creature Comforts, Wallace & Gromit) and Dreamworks with Nick and Vincent. It is is a fun story about rats in England (much better than it sounds – if you are a fan of early Guy Ritchie work – there are some scenes you will love; the French frogs are fantastic) and has amazing actors doing the voices (Hugh Jackman, Kate Winslett, Ian McKellan, Jean Reno, Bill Nighy, Andy Serkis…). It’s not stop-motion animation but it still has some of the feel of Aardman work – there’s no mistaking the teeth. Not least of the fun is walking around Midtown pretending to be animated slugs – Eeeeeeeee!
