The Madrid at Manhattan Theatre Club

The Madrid poster

I saw Edie Falco in Side Man on Broadway. It was one of the best theatre performances I have ever seen. When she left the stage I was just waiting for her to come back.

In The Madrid she plays a woman who leaves her life as a mother, wife, teacher. There is no great monologue. There is a sense of keenly felt need to leave coupled with an inability/lack of need to explain. But mostly there is a sense of Edie Falco’s absence.

That she is the only one on the poster and it is misleading.

Phoebe Strole as her daughter has the most dialogue/stage time as she interacts with various characters and she does a great job.

Frances Sternhagen, has great old lady lines as the mother, delivered with great comic timing (loved her in Steel Magnolias too!).

Heidi Schreck and Darren Goldstein are great as the neighbours who are a bit overinvolved.

Seth Clayton as their son has a corker of a comic scene near the end of the play.

John Ellison Conlee plays the soft father/husband very well too.

Edie Falco opens the play alone on stage in the first scene. You then wait for her to return, which I suppose is clever, as the characters await this too.

This NY Times review of The Madrid points out some clever ways dialogue echoes themes of absence.

Mostly it felt like it was a showcase for the talents of Phoebe Strole and that the poster is mis-selling the balance of the play echoed in that Phoebe’s character moves back home, takes over Edie Falco’s character’s teaching job. Clever meta-theatre and/or cynical promotion of the star.

The audience was very engaged. The advice to Phoebe “You gotta get a job you hate in a city you love and find some guy in his mid-to-late 20s to torture” was met with a cheer. There are a lot of relatable situations in the play but most keenly felt is absence.

This may be deliberate but felt disappointing.

Aram Sinnreich, David Byrne, Chris Ruen & Flash Rosenberg

The upside of not publishing my blog post on talks I went to in NYC by Aram Sinnreich, David Byrne & Chris Ruen is that the videos have been uploaded. If you like ignore my notes and just watch :o)

December 4th, 2012, thoroughly enjoyed Aram Sinnreich’s talk based on his forthcoming book Piracy Crusade. Read the full draft of the book for free on http://piracycrusade.com. The presentation embedded below, and the book, are both freely available under a Creative Commons 3.0 Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike license. [If you give feedback on the website piracycrusade.com before the book goes to press you will get a mention in the book too though it may be too late for this since I've taken so long to put this online.]

NY Public Library Holiday Open House & Vynl

Spent a really enjoyable day in Manhattan, in which I learned NEVER take the F train on a weekend if you can avoid it. There was a shuttle bus for a bit in the middle of the journey due to construction.

Went to the NY Public Library’s Holiday Open House Party in the gorgeous building on 42nd and 5th. This event is highly recommended for families, as there is music playing, people in festive costumes on stilts, storytelling, facepainting & balloon giveaways.

We thoroughly enjoyed the Lunch Hour NYC exhibition that was on. Catch it until Feb 17. FREE

Here Edward Beller describes the first stainless steel hot dog pushcarts

Getting together with Jocelyn was the perfect excuse to where my cute new customised fringed top from SundayGirl fashion, purchased at the Niamh’s boutique stall at the mima collective shopping event. It’s difficult to spot in the photo but there is black fringe sewn on to the bottom of the top.

Followed by a meal at one of my fave places to eat in NYC – Vynl. Service is always friendly. Food is always delicious and prices are not obscene.

Didn’t get back to Brooklyn too late. Popped in to relative newcomer to Sheepshead Bay YooBerry for yummy, self-service frozen yogurt as a nice belated dessert.

Was way too stuffed at Vynl to contemplate the delicious Oreo-filled chocolate chip cookie served with two small glasses of milk shake – Next time!!

Mirage, B-Boys, Guggenheim & Despicable Me

Had a great time visiting with a longtime friend and going to a real Brooklyn diner – Mirage on Kings Highway. Oh how I love, the typography on the sign, the never-ending coffee cup, the inclusive holiday messaging and random vending machines.

Then a quick trip to Marshalls. Enjoyed the hooks in the fitting room.

Headed into Manhattan and was entertained on the train.

Pay what you wish hours at the Guggenheim on Saturday 5.45-7.45 which was just enough time. Thoroughly enjoyed the Picasso Black and White (until Jan 23), also Now’s the Time: Recent Acquisitions (until Jan 2) and Gabriel Orozco: Asterisms (until Jan 13). Subway promotion of art exhibitions works. Saw the square advert for the Picasso and am very glad I did.

and then chilling with friends with delivery of Thai food and watching Despicable Me. A good day!

Had a lovely lunch at Tao.

Perfect place to have lunch if you want to be near the Apple Store and FAO Schwartz.

Then went and drooled at all of the pretty things in Crate & Barrel.

Met up with more friends in Manhattan and Brooklyn and have been enjoying the decorations on my way home.
