The BBC Click program about technology recently reported on the fact that Windows now has to include a choice of browsers in new bundled operating systems to avoid an unfair advantage for Explorer and had comments from various companies providing browsers about why theirs is the browser of choice.

If you watch the second half though you will see what they say are videos by viewers indicative of the repsonses they received. Get the feeling the producers of Click don’t use/like Explorer? Though they have the Microsoft guy on first in the execs portion – check out the viewer representing Explorer. roflol

Stuff White People Like in the UK & Life in the UK

Stuff White People Like

Someone left a newspaper on the train I took this morning (the Daily Mail) and I had a flip through it and came across this article…the content seemed familiar. The end of the article points out that Stuff White People Like: The Definitive Guide to the Unique Taste of Millions is now available in the UK.

This is a book based on the popular website.

Interesting difference is it talks about “middle class people” instead of White people. Class as opposed to race.

Possibly because over 90% of the UK population is White (according to the 2001 census) vs. 74% in the US (according to 2006 American Community Survey)…people just aren’t faced with race as an issue so much outside of London.

According to the 2001 census 45% of all ethnic minority people live in the London area, where they form nearly one-third of the population (29%).

The only reason I knew these stats exist is from studying random statistics for the Life in the UK test.

Crossword puzzles on Kickstarter

Kickstarter is a way for creative people to get their dream projects, big or small, funded by the general public through microfinance as opposed to big massive sponsorship deals. These can be events, art projects, documentaries.

Similar to PBS / NPR funding drives there are donation levels and rewards, decided on by the creative people.

Many post videos to peak interest that are fantastic and status updates can be really creative too.

I found out about kickstarter via Ken Jennings (highly recommend his book) when he linked to Eric Berlin’s crossword puzzles.

Eric Berlin creates crossword puzzles. He wanted to create a suite of puzzles that interlink. To generate interest he linked to a pdf of a previous suite of puzzles on Brooklyn as a theme. They’re quite good. Just donating$1 gave you access to the puzzles and helped them to get made. For $5 people could participate in a competition. Reward levels above that included copies of his book.

RIP Free Events NY (2004-2008) / Finding Things to Do in NYC

I just deleted the Free Events NY group on Yahoo!. I started it on June 20, 2004. I had created a master list of free events going on in NYC organized by date for my benefit so I could look up a specific day and see what was on. I decided to share it with whoever would be interested via the Yahoo! group. Over the years thousands of events were posted.

I thoroughly enjoyed a lot of the events and was happy to share my efforts to organize them. I got some sweet thank you emails from a number of members. There were also the random emails from people who couldn’t figure out how to download the files, the messages I had to delete when people tried to post events that were not free – the title of the group was too mysterious and unclear and responding to RSVP emails when people didn’t notice that I was not the person who needed the response.

I have moved to England and so I finally pulled the plug today. There were still 1230 members even though it had not been updated in about a year. The upcoming.org group still exists, though I don’t post events, but I gladly moderate through what people choose to share every so often.

Besides the resources below, general tips on finding what to do with yourself in NYC…If there’s a venue or community organization you like – find their website and subscribe to their calendar. On the websites of book stores you can find out about author events in your area. Check out New York City’s Parks Department website for info about events in your local park. You can do the same for your local library. Also, if there is a college or university near you they may have events that are open to the public. Many cultural organizations have facebook pages and twitter feeds as another way to communicate with you – do a few searches on your favorite social networking site.

There are loads of things going on. Realize you can’t do it all. Give yourself some time to recharge. Enjoy every minute.

UK teaches Holocaust education redux

Received an email from a friend today beginning with:

Recently this week, UK removed The Holocaust from its school curriculum because it “offended” the Moslem population which claims it never occurred. This is a frightening portent of the fear that is gripping the world and how easily each country is giving into it.

Here’s a link to an older blog post The UK does Teach about the Holocaust where I have included the response of the Holocaust Education Trust in London. This forward is untrue. If you receive it please correct the sender.

My friend did not want to send the link above to correct information because she felt embarrassed for sending a hoax. She had received the email from people she thought were reputable. It seemed like a good message to send on and she did so to people near and far (some she was close to, and some not). Remember the people who were murdered in the Holocaust and don’t give in to Holocaust deniers. Who can argue with that?

Especially in times when Holocaust denial exists, and Survivors of the Holocaust will not be around for much longer, we must be ever-vigilant to be accurate with the information we send.

These email forwards are especially bad. They vilify the entire Muslim community in broad strokes. Definitely not the way to build bridges.

If one person from the long list forwards it on, the myth gets perpetuated. Any email, especially one with absolutes, should be checked with a quick google search. If you want you can also bookmark purportal.com which lets you search hoax, fraud, scam, phishing and misinformation resources from one place.

Wii have a problem solver

Consumerist has posted a solution to flying wii controllers. Comment on waiting for an official solution from Nintendo: “It ain’t carved from Zelda’s hyperpolygnal ass and handed down by the hands of many small Japanese gods, but it’ll do the trick.”

Nintendo Wii is a new gaming system where you move the controllers through the air to control the action on the screen. Some people have been doing so a bit overzealously. Joe’s Goals is a great way to keep track of things you want to accomplish. It is easy to use. I use it to keep track of food, excercise, and a few other goals. It’s nice to be able to see how I’m doing over time – and they just added a feature where you can keep daily notes. It’s like an elementary school star chart – only for adults – nothing wrong with positive reinforcement.

Wellhung: No wait! Now I’m squinting, trying to find the night table. I’m feeling along the dresser, knocking over cans of hair spray, picture frames and your candles.

Sweetheart: I’m buttoning my blouse. Now I’m putting on my shoes.

Wellhung: I’ve found my glasses. I’m putting them on. My God! One of our candles fell on the curtain. The curtain is on fire! I’m pointing at it, a shocked look on my face.

Sweetheart: Go to hell! I’m logging off, you loser!

Wellhung: Now the carpet is on fire! Oh nooooo!

Sweetheart: Bye!!!
